Can I cook taco meat in a slow cooker?
Oh my. Absolutely! In fact, a long slow simmer will give your ground beef a richer taco flavor than just throwing stuff into a skillet. You can even do this in bulk and then divide it for future taco-flavored recipes – like a delicious taco lasagna.
AND you do not have to pre-brown the meat! If that isn’t a time-saver meal, I don’t know what is!
The idea is to use 1/4 cup of taco seasoning and 12 oz of salsa for each 1 1/4 pounds of lean ground beef. You need to cook it on low for 6 hours or high for three. Then, make sure you are dumping any accumulated grease off before using the meat.
How much taco seasoning do I need for 1 pound of meat?
Obviously, this answer can be subjective. However, if you are buying the little packets, there is approximately 2 tablespoons of seasoning in them.
So, to answer the question, you want to use about 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning for each pound of meat in your recipe.
If you make taco meat instead of cooking it within another recipe, you will add the seasoning and 1/2 cup of water to the browned and drained meat.
Bring the water to a boil. Then allow it all to simmer for 5-7 minutes. This gets the seasoning into, instead of just on, the meat!
