Ground beef is synonymous with hearty comfort food.
Whether you cook it up in a frying pan or simmer it all day in your slow cooker, hamburger meat is the base of many family favorites like sloppy joes and shepherd’s pie!
Quick browned beef recipe ideas:
Make up a pot of mashed potatoes, add in some sour cream & salt and pepper, then add the beef after browning and draining. Sounds weird, but I promise it is delicious!
After browning and draining a pound of mince meat, add a jar of marinara sauce. You could also use Italian seasoning and tomato sauce. If you like mushrooms, chop some then add the mushrooms now. Then, slice sweet bell peppers in half lengthwise and fill with the meat mixture. Bake the stuffed peppers in the oven at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes. When there is about 10 minutes left, top them with shredded fiesta blend cheese.
Is ground beef and hamburger meat the same thing?
It is exactly the same thing! Ground beef or hamburger meat is also called mince meat. I am not really sure why this one simple ingredient is called many different things, but here is an interesting tidbit from meat.edu!
The definition of ground beef is chopped fresh and/or frozen beef from primal cuts and trimmings. Trimmings are defined as the small pieces containing both lean and fat that come from a beef carcass as the carcass is cut or “fabricated” into beef primals, subprimals or individual cuts.
Meat Science
Well, that was interesting science about our food, wasn’t it? Now, I feel like we both know all there is to know about ground hamburger meat.
How do you drain browned ground beef?
Draining the grease from ground hamburger meat, after you have browned it, is actually super easy to do.
If you look this question up, you are going to get a ton of of crazy answers like “title the bowl so the grease pools and then use a spoon to slowly ladle the grease from your bowl or pot”.
That is so silly! Simply dump the pan or pot of browned meat into a strainer. Give the strainer a couple of good shakes, rinse the pot (NOT the meat), and then put the now drained beef back into the rinsed (not washed) pot.
Easy peasy!
The reason you do not want to wash the pot is because you do not want to get rid of all the grease – the grease gives it the flavor. You only want to remove the excess greasy to make your meal yummy without being greasy and just a tad healthier.
Remember not to pour the grease down your sink drain. It will clog the pipes and cause septic or sewer problems. I like to drain it into an aluminum lined pot. After allowing the grease to cool, simply fold up the aluminum foil and throw it away.
